Abstract

In many cases, the use of prefabricated concrete elements to establish the concrete boom of composite steel beams offers economic benefits in comparison to the use of cast-in-place concrete. The use of poured joints as composite joints is a simple and safe method to create a shear-resistant connection between the steel beam and the concrete boom and satisfies all fabrication and installation requirements at the same time. The characteristic feature of the poured joint is that the stud connectors of the composite steel beam are fitted in gaps between or inside the prefab concrete elements that is poured with grout subsequently. Due to the geometry and the material of the poured joints, the behaviour of the stud connectors might differ from the official load transfer model of stud connectors in undisturbed concrete. The present study examines the influence on the connectors due to their installation in poured joints and the effects on the bearing and deformation behaviour of the stud connector. It gives an overview of various composite solutions used in practice involving steel and prefab concrete elements as well as of typical poured joint types. Based on the load transfer model of stud connectors in undisturbed concrete, the deviations from the pre-conditions of this model due to a particular type of poured joint are exposed. The effects of these deviations were examined in Push-out and beam tests. From the knowledge gained, a model for the load transfer of stud connectors with steel loop anchored reinforcement is developed. A proposal concerning the different bearing behaviour in regard to cast-in-place concrete is put forward. With the help of the proposed method, the described influences of the poured joint on the stud connectors can be taken into account in the calculation of the connectors.
