Advanced Design Tools for Steel Sheet Piling

Short description

Eurocode 3 Part 5 allows the plastic design of steel sheet piles (SSP). Plastic design of steel members result in large deflections of the SSP due to the plastic behaviour and must take into account the earth pressure re-distribution due to the large deformations of the SSP. Within Europe there are different soil models used to predict the earth pressure acting on embedded retaining walls:
a) "Limit Earth Pressure Model" (LEPM) commonly used in F, G, UK
b) "Subgrade Reaction Model" (SGRM) commonly used in F, NL, UK
c) "Finite Element Method"(FEM)
The goal of the research project is the development of a design tool for SSP-sections which
- takes account of the Eurocode system
- takes account of national approaches and soil models
- establishes the background and
- contributes to a design tool (i.e. handbook)
The design tool is intended to be a handbook with simple calculation models justified by a sophisticated theoretical and experimental background.
