Design for optimal life cycle costs (LCC) of high-speed railway bridges by enhanced monitoring systems
General aim of the project is an improvement of design, safety and durability of steel-concrete composite solutions for the realization of railway bridges in high-speed networks. Composite bridges are an important alternative to concrete bridges due to considerable advantages regarding design, construction time, durability and costs. They are largely exploited in high-speed lines of the European railway networks even if various still unsolved problems in design and management limit their exploiting.
The project activities aim to remove actual uncertainties due to dynamic effects and interaction phenomena, fatigue loadings, structural modelling, fatigue life and damage assessment. An important aspect of the project is the integration of monitoring techniques in the design process. The high-level of accuracy achieved in design and the potential given by health monitoring techniques will allow to set up procedures for the optimal planning of maintenance works, minimising life-cycle cost and guaranteeing, at the same time, required safety and working conditions.
